The American Red Cross has an urgent need for platelet donations to prevent a shortage this winter. January is National Blood Donor Month and this month’s goal is to collect enough platelet donations to meet patients’ needs.
The Red Cross must collect about 14,000 platelet donations every day to meet the needs of patients. American Red Cross Spokesperson Kristen Stancil says during a platelet donation, a small portion of your blood is drawn from your arm and passed through a sophisticated cell-separating machine. Platelet donation takes approximately 1-and-a-half to 2 hours and may be a single or dual arm procedure depending on the collection device used. A platelet donation is also called a 'platelet apheresis donation. Platelet donations are collected at select American Red Cross Blood Donation Centers only. The closest center for our region is located in Birmingham at the Red Cross Blood Center. You can donate up to 24 times per year.
