Changes in Teacher Salary on the Way?

Wednesday, January 27, 2016

Senate President Pro Tem Del Marsh of Anniston says that his legislation-The Raise Act- dealing with teachers’ salaries and tenure will not tie their performance to their pay. Senator Marsh says his goal in the legislation is to pay beginning teachers the highest salary in the Southeast and increase the pay of long-term teachers, but to also be accountable to parents and taxpayers. Marsh adds that even after introduction, the bill could likely change as it works its way through the Statehouse. Under the draft bill, teachers hired before May 1ST, 2017, can opt for a performance salary schedule, but forfeit all rights and protections associated with tenured status.
