Law enforcement officers giving a special salute today in east Alabama for a state prison guard killed in the line of duty. Governor Robert Bentley unveiled the latest name on the Alabama Law Enforcement Memorial Wall at Centennial Memorial Park in Anniston.Corrections Officer Kenneth Bettis died after an inmate at Holman Correctional Facility stabbed him last month. Bettis had been with the prison since 2009. He also served our country in Iraq as a member of the Army National Guard, earning several service medals. Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange says that the state needs to step up efforts to prevent attacks like this one. Governor Bentley agrees that something needs to be done to provide a safer prison system, and he says it all comes down to the inmate-to-guard ratio. There are now 537 line-of-duty names engraved on the Alabama Law Enforcement Memorial in Anniston.
