The Jacksonville State football team received the No. 3 National Seed in the NCAA Division I Football Playoffs and will host either Samford or Youngstown State on Dec. 3 at 1 p.m.
Fresh off a 33-7 win over UT Martin that sealed the Gamecocks' third-straight Ohio Valley Conference Championship, the team and its fans gathered in JSU Stadium to learn their playoff fate on Sunday morning's NCAA FCS Selection Show.
JSU earned a bye in the 24-team field for the third-straight year and the No. 3 National Seed. Samford will travel to Youngstown State on Nov. 26, with the winner visiting Jacksonville for the second-round matchup.
The Gamecocks (10-1, 7-0 OVC) became the first team to win three-straight outright OVC titles since Eastern Kentucky won four from 1981-84 and became the first to go three-straight seasons with perfect conference records in OVC play. Their 24th consecutive conference win on Saturdayextended the longest conference winning streak in Division I, while their 14th-straight home win extended the longest home winning streak in FCS.
As long as the Gamecocks advance, the No. 3 seed guarantees JSU will be in the friendly confines of Burgess-Snow Field for at least the second round and the quarterfinals. The only scenario that would have JSU leave home before the National Championship Game would be if No. 2 Eastern Washington is still alive in the field during the semifinal round. The FCS Title will be decided in Frisco, Texas, on Jan. 7.
Five-time defending champion North Dakota State earned the No. 1 overall seed, while James Madison is fourth. The No. 5 seed is Sam Houston State, The Citadel is No. 6 and North Dakota is No. 7. South Dakota State rounds out the eight national seeds at No. 8.
