Land Transfer Moves Parks Plans Ahead

An important piece to the puzzle is in the works for the Freedom Riders Park. Calhoun County officials held a public hearing on the next step in the local effort to create a national monument to honor the Freedom Riders. A stretch along Highway 202 in Anniston is the place where the Freedom Riders were stopped by a white mob that set their bus on fire. Freedom Riders Park Committee Chairman, Pete Conroy says the work is well worth the outcome. The county owns the land, but once officially approved the land will be transferred to Anniston. Conroy and other advocates have asked President Barack Obama to declare the park and Anniston’s former Greyhound station a national monument.
