The Leesburg Town Council has accepted the resignation of the newly appointed Police Chief Brian Gilliland. During the special called council meeting, Leesburg Mayor Brandy Pierce denied rumors that the town is considering disbanding the police department- which would leave the sheriff’s department to police the city limits. Pierce said that is not an option and that they plan to fully staff the police department as quickly as possible. Leesburg will accept applications for the chief of police position through February 17th and the council will announce its decision on March 6th. Gilliland plans to return to his previous position as a deputy with the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Department.
