A longtime aide says former Alabama Governor Don Siegelman is set for release from prison this week after serving more than 6 years for bribery and obstruction of justice. Friend and former aide Chip Hill says the ex-governor will be released to house arrest Wednesday, but federal prison officials have yet to confirm the release. Siegelman has been serving his time in a federal prison in Louisiana. In 2006, a jury indicted Siegelman for trading an appointment to a state health board in exchange for donations to his 1999 statewide lottery campaign. He appealed that conviction, but in 2009, an appeals court upheld the jury’s decision.
