Theft by Deception Charges for Etowah County Man

An Etowah County man is behind bars for a credit card scheme that involved dozens of theft victims in several states. Thanks for joining us. I’m Carl Brady. Jason Cox is charged with two counts of theft by deception. Investigators say Cox stole about $165,000 over the course of a year. They say Cox answered an email where a woman from Nigeria would mail him debit cards, credit cards, and check books. Cox would purchase the items he was told and then send the majority of the items to Nigeria and -in some cases- keeping money for himself. Gadsden police say they began investigating the case after getting a call from a victim in California about three purchases at a Gadsden jewelry store. Detective Clark Thompson says it took several weeks to crack this case. Detective Thompson also says the woman Cox was in contact with has more than likely left the country and it would be very difficult to find her. The investigation is still ongoing, and there are believed to be between 10 and 15 victims in the case. Cox is currently out on bond but more charges are pending.
