Arrest Made in Cold Murder Case

Thursday, February 9, 2017

An arrest in a Gadsden cold case brings new hope for family members of a murder victim. On March 8, 2014 Gary Stokes was found dead on the front porch of his home on Hartford Street. Throughout the investigation, detectives had come up empty in their search for the person that stabbed Stokes. Criminal Investigations Division Captain Paul Cody says in cases like these... you never give up. Captain Cody says that late last week police got a tip with new information about the case. Cody and his detectives worked over the weekend re-interviewing witnesses. The new information led them to arrest William Rowe, Stokes' former neighbor. Investigators believe that the two men had had an ongoing dispute. We met with Stokes' sister and daughter, who talked about how they are feeling after this break in the case. Stokes says that when she got the news of the arrest, she couldn’t contain her joy and appreciation. William Rowe is being held at the Etowah County Detention Center on a $100,000 cash bond.
