JSU Men Prep For First-Place Belmont

The Jacksonville State men's basketball team hosts Belmont at 6 p.m. Thursday at Pete Mathews Coliseum.

It is the 15th meeting between the two schools, and Belmont (17-4, 11-0 OVC) holds a 10-4 all-time advantage over the Gamecocks (15-11, 7-4 OVC). Three of Jacksonville State's four wins over the Nashville program have come at Pete Mathews Coliseum. The last time JSU took a game in the series was Feb. 11, 2015. The Gamecocks edged the Bruins 72-70 in their second meeting of the 2014-15 season.

Jacksonville State currently sits in third place in the OVC East behind Belmont (11-0) and Morehead State (7-3) in the division standings. Senior guard Erik Durham ranks just outside the nation's top three-point shooters with a .512 field goal percentage, hitting 63 treys this season, and sophomore Christian Cunningham is 26th in the nation with 231 total rebounds. The two starters look to help avenge a 77-60 loss suffered in Nashville earlier this season.

Belmont comes into the game as the only undefeated team remaining in the league and the team everyone is chasing. It owns the highest RPI ranking in the OVC at 65th, and leads the conference in eight statistical categories. The Bruins have won 13 consecutive games, not losing a contest since falling 79-66 to Middle Tennessee on Dec. 14. Every team Belmont has lost to was either ranked or receiving votes at the time of the defeat.

It is also SGA Spirit Night, and the student group with the most school spirit will win $300. In addition, students will have the chance to win up to $200 in the "Dash for Cash" contest.
