A new bill making it a felony to assault police officers and other first responders will carry the name of an Anniston police officer killed in the line of duty. Thanks for joining us. I'm Carl Brady. The Public Safety Protection Act of 2017 will make assaulting a police officer, firefighter or EMS personnel a felony. If the bill becomes law, it will be known as the Justin Sollohub Act, in honor of the Anniston police officer who was killed in 2011. The bill would increase the penalty for attacking first responders to a sentence of ten years to life. Sollohub was killed by Joshua Russell who was sent to death row after his conviction in 2013. Russell shot Solluhub during a foot chase after the officer encountered him on a routine patrol.
