A unique, Olympic-style shooting competition for young people is underway in east Alabama. The Civilian Marksmanship Program is holding the Air Rifle Regionals at the CMP’s South Competition Center located in Anniston. The event showcases high school Junior ROTC athletes from around the country who use precision air rifles. The competitors shoot pellets at state-of-the-art electronic targets. Program Outreach Coordinator Chance Cover says some of the students are professional. Cover also says hundreds of competitors, coaches and spectators take part in the championships. The CMP is a federally chartered non-profit corporation that is dedicated to firearm safety and marksmanship training. Other regional events will be held in Ohio and Las Vegas before Nationals in March. The competition picks back up tomorrow morning at 8 and will wrap up around 4 in the afternoon.
