Father Striving to Bring an End to Bullying

Saturday, February 25, 2017

A father sharing his son’s story and striving to change lives is speaking to Emma Sansom Middle School students. John and Kelly Halligan lost their thirteen-year old son Ryan to suicide on October 7, 2003. At the time of his death, Ryan was a middle school student in Vermont. It was revealed in detail after Ryan’s death that he was ridiculed and humiliated by peers on-line. In memory of his son, Halligan began speaking to middle school students about the affects of bullying. He says that students have more impact than they know. Halligan led the push for the Vermont Bully Prevention bill, which was signed into law in May 2004 only a few months after his son’s death. Halligan says that with each school he talks to he hopes he changes the life of at least one student.
