Alabama is the only state that allows judges to override a jury’s recommendation in death penalty cases, but a pair of state lawmakers want to change that practice. Republican Senator Dick Brewbaker of Pike Road and Democratic Representative Chris England of Tuscaloosa both sponsored bills to do away with the practice. The lawmakers joined Alabama Arise today in Montgomery for a press conference regarding the issue. Representative England says it is a matter of doing listening to the people and doing the right thing. England also adds that he and Brewbaker cannot take credit for the momentum on this issue. The Senate voted 30-1 Thursday to pass Brewbaker’s bill, and England’s bill won overwhelming House committee approval earlier this month. England expects his bill to clear the full house this week.
