Senator Pushing for Three New Prisons

Steps towards solving a long-standing crisis in Alabama prisons is underway. Currently the prisons house far more inmates than they were originally intended. Senator Cam Ward passed a bill proposal to build up to three new prison facilities. The bill will protect against waste or cost overruns by requiring Corrections to hire an outside project manager to oversee construction of the facilities, and limit the bond authority. Ward says this plan will dramatically increase safety for the inmates and correctional officers. The bill is on its way to the House of Representatives for consideration.
