A local school board rejects a plan to cut faculty and staff. The Anniston School Board held a meeting today and members voted against Superintendent Darren Douthitt’s proposal to cut about 76 non-tenured employees. The five school board members rejected the proposal with a 3 to 2 vote. Board members say that cuts are needed to meet the state’s requirements to have one month’s worth of operating expenses in the bank. We talked to Superintendent Douthitt after the meeting and he told us that cuts are a difficult decision, but one that needs to be made. Douthitt also says that he and his team will come up with another plan to meet the requirements. Anniston City Schools should have about 1.6 million dollars in reserve, but Douthitt says, right now, they have less than $300,000 saved.
