A Nigerian man is charged with arson in connection to a fire inside the Etowah County Detention Center. Arson investigators say Okiemute Omatie started a fire on May 26th by manipulating an electrical outlet with a small wire. Officials say security video inside the common area clearly shows Omatie walking to a cell in Unit 3 with a burning piece of paper. He then set fire to a mattress and other combustible items inside the cell. The sprinkler system inside the unit activated as smoke and flames filled the cell. Omatie and four other Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainees, were outside their cell on free time when the incident occurred. Omatie is charged with arson and destruction of state property. He is now being held in local custody with a $50,000 cash bond.
