African-American lawmakers are urging federal judges to reject newly redrawn legislative districts. The Alabama Legislative Black Caucus filed its objections to the latest plan that was approved by the GOP-controlled Alabama Legislature. The caucus argues that race is the predominant reason the districts of white Republicans still extend into Jefferson County in an attempt to maintain more majority-white than majority-black districts. The filing also notes that there is close correlation between race and party affiliation in the state. Republicans have argued that the new map addresses problems previously identified by the court.
