Elder Abuse Awareness Day

An organization holds an event to bring awareness to elder abuse. The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office and the Department of Human Resources sponsored the special event today. June 15th is the annual World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. Older people in our communities have rights too…including the right to be safe and to be treated with dignity and respect, however, thousands are abused and neglected every year. State Representative Doctor Barbara Boyd says family is most important. Boyd says she does not believe in nursing homes but understands their purpose. DHR investigated more than 9,000 reports of suspected abuse, neglect and exploitation of adults statewide last year.
