City of Birmingham Sued Over Covering Statue

Attorney General Steve Marshall is suing the City of Birmingham for covering up a Confederate Memorial. Marshall announced today that his office is filing suit against the city and Birmingham Mayor William Bell for violating the state’s Memorial Preservation Act. Last night, Bell ordered city workers to cover up a confederate statue in a city park. The law, passed just this year, prohibits the removal or alteration of a monument that has been in a public space for more than forty years. The covering of the statue comes amid a nationwide reaction to violence in Charlottesville, Virginia, where a protest against removing a confederate statue turned deadly.
