Deadline Nears for Prisoner Mental Health Care Plan

Alabama is nearing a deadline to tell a federal judge how it plans to improve mental health care for prisoners. The judge ordered that the state and lawyers for the inmates mediate on how to improve conditions until September First, with a conference to update the judge on the mediation being held on September Seventh. A US district judge ordered the state to improve the conditions back in June after ruling that the current psychiatric care of inmates was so quote, “horrendously inadequate,” that it violates the US Constitution’s ban on cruel and unusual punishment.
