The Center for Disaster Preparedness in Anniston hosts training for volunteers to assist FEMA efforts in disaster-stricken Texas, and possibly Florida, too. The CDP has canceled all of its normal courses to allow training for the Department of Homeland Security's Surge Capacity Force. The Surge Capacity Force is made up of DHS volunteers who train to assist FEMA efforts after a disaster. Mobilization Center Manager Rick Dickson says the Surge Capacity Force is a big help to FEMA. More than 1,000 people have trained at the CDP and have already been deployed to assist in Texas. More than 300 trainees at the CDP are on standby in preparation for Hurricane Irma.
