An Oxford native is among those evacuated from St. Maarten after facing the brunt of the storm. The video you see here comes from Tull Wigley, who grew up in Oxford. Wigley was vacationing on the Caribbean island when Irma struck as a Category Five hurricane. We spoke with Wigley, who described the tense moments as the hurricane passed through early Wednesday morning. A US military plane came to the island to evacuate Wigley and other Americans on Sunday. Some six-thousand Americans were stranded on the island after the storm, which destroyed the commercial airport. Many of the buildings on the island were wiped out, and Wigley says many of the people that live on the island have lost everything. He credits the staff of the resort he was staying at with keeping him and 200 other tourists safe during the storm and its aftermath. Wigley landed in Atlanta today, and ironically, Irma’s wrath is preventing him to take his connecting flight home to South Carolina.
