One Gadsden shelter has opened specifically for those who may live in an unsafe place. Etowah County’s Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster opened up the Elliot Community Center Shelter as a refuge for those who live in a mobile home or other home that may be unsafe during the storm. The community center is pet-friendly, and is also providing meals for residents who are sheltered there. VOAD volunteer Marie Johnson says anyone seeking a safe place is welcome. Eight people are currently riding out the storm at the shelter, and while they are all locals, Johnson says that evacuees from Florida are welcome to come to the shelter throughout the night as well.
