The Calhoun County Coroner’s Office has released the name of the man shot and killed by an East Alabama Sheriff’s Deputy earlier this week. Coroner Pat Brown identified the man as Jesse VanSipe. VanSipe was originally from Michigan and had recently been living in Pell City. VanSipe was killed Monday after a deputy responded to a suspicious person call near Piedmont. The deputy discovered that VanSipe was living out of his broken down car and that the man had an active warrant out of Pell City. According to Sheriff Matthew Wade, as the deputy attempted to pat down VanSipe, the suspect fought with the deputy and grabbed one of his weapons. The deputy shot VanSipe during the struggle. He was taken to Regional Medical Center in Jacksonville, where he later died.
