The unveiling of a historic marker has many recalling memories of growing up in the church. Many people visited St. John United Methodist Church to help celebrate a historical marker noting the church’s designation into the Anniston Civil Rights Trail. Bethel Missionary Baptist Church Reverend W.S. Fields says the marker represents the struggles and all that has been overcome. On Mother’s Day of 1963, Kenneth Adams shot into the church and into the homes of two black families. Adams was convicted and sentenced to 180 days in jail. Back in December, the church was also placed on the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage.
