Jacksonville Fire Chief Retiring

An East Alabama Fire Chief is hanging up his hat after more than two decades on the job. Jacksonville Fire Chief Wade Buckner is retiring after 28 years of fire and EMS service.

Buckner started volunteering at the Rainbow City Fire Department two months after graduating from Southside High School in 1989. He was hired full-time in January of 1991 and allowed to attend the fire college. Buckner worked at Rainbow City, and for different EMS agencies, for 19 years before ending his service in the City of Jacksonville.

Buckner says he will miss the people the most. Buckner has served as the Chief of the Jacksonville Fire Department since 2009 and helped oversee the renovation of Station Number 2. Under Buckner’s guidance, response times have been cut by 18% and relationships with other departments in the county have improved. The Chief will officially retire at the end of the month.
