A local fire department is giving out smoke detectors and educating people on the importance of having one. The Oxford Fire Department is going door to door asking people if they have a smoke detector. So far this week, firefighters have installed more than 150 detectors in local homes. Oxford Fire Chief Gary Sparks says every family needs to take steps to ensure they’re alerted in case of a fire.
Chief Sparks says in many cases, a working smoke detector means the difference between life and death.
Chief Sparks also urges you to test your smoke detectors more regularly during the holiday season, due to the increased risk of fire from holiday cooking and decorations. The Oxford Fire Department offers free smoke detectors year round.
