Red Ribbon Week at Southside Elementary

Friday, October 27, 2017

The Nations oldest and largest drug prevention campaign is making its way to schools in Etowah County. Southside Elementary School students listened to Etowah County Sheriff's Deputies talk about the dangers of drug abuse today. Red Ribbon Week aims to spread an anti-drug message to students of all ages.

Sheriff Todd Entrekin says that during Red Ribbon Week, young people are encouraged to pledge a drug-free life. Students also took tours of the Etowah County Sheriff’s Office helicopter, armored vehicle, and motorcycles.

Red Ribbon Week began in 1985 to honor the death of DEA Special Agent, Enrique Camarena, who was killed while investigating drug traffickers in Mexico. Locally, Red Ribbon participants honor Drug Task Force Commander, Chris McCurley, who was killed during an illegal drug case in 1997.
