A local university opens a food pantry for students who need a little extra help. Jacksonville State University is providing food donations to students. University officials say they want students to focus on school and not worry about where their next meal is coming from.
The JSU pantry is in a basement room in Sparkman Hall, and is accessible to students through the back door of the building. It’s kept out of sight so students won’t be embarrassed using it. JSU Student Affairs Vice President Tim King says anyone can donate.
King says the pantry has been used by 15 students in the past month and expects that number to grow as word spreads around campus. To use the pantry students must fill out a one-time, confidential assessment form in order to keep track of who is using the service. As of right now, the pantry is open from 1pm to 3pm on Tuesdays and from 4pm to 6pm on Fridays.
