A city council looks to demolish an 87-year-old bridge. The Oxford City Council hired an engineering firm to tear down Hell’s Gate Bridge. The bridge used to be the only way drivers could cross Choccolocco Creek, south of Interstate 20 near Oxford’s Exit 188. The bridge has been closed for 10 years.
Council President Chris Spurlin says the council is looking to replace the bridge. The new bridge would connect to the Oxford Commons shopping center. CDG Engineers and Associates will seek up to 800-thousand dollars allocated to the state from the Federal Highway Administration’s Transportation Alternatives Program for the work.
The city must match 20 percent of whatever amount is granted, as much as 160-thousand dollars.
