Community Calls for Lowering of Speed Limit

Saturday, January 6, 2018

Many people are coming together to make a change and save lives by lowering the speed limit. Highway 431, from the Mapco in Glencoe all the way into Saks, has many local residents concerned that the speed limit is too high.

Currently the speed limit is 65 miles per hour. Calhoun County School Educator Stephen Gay is doing all he can to get that number lowered. He says it’s not going to be easy, but it could save lives.

Gay also says he won’t stop until the speed limit is reduced. Alexandria Fire Chief Jimmy Fisher says he and the Alexandria Fire Department are behind Gay 100%.

Chief Fisher also says that in his 18 years on the job there have been too many accidents that could have been avoided. Many of the business owners along the highway say the speed limit should be lowered to 55 miles per hour.
