A local library is encouraging people to register and possibly save a life. The Gadsden Public Library and the Be The Match organization held a Bone Marrow Drive Registry. Be The Match is operated by the National Marrow Donor Program and is a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to helping every patient get the life-saving transplant they need.
70% of people that need a transplant don’t have matches within their own families. Riverview Regional Hospital Registered Nurse Amber Davidson says it is a painless process.
Davidson has donated before and was a match to a man with Leukemia 15 years ago. Calhoun County resident Jimmy Roberson was told he only had six to nine months to live until he got the call of a lifetime.
Roberson says after two years of recovery he was able to contact the woman that saved his life. She was a 27 year-old woman from Germany. Roberson says that she came to Alabama this past Labor day where he was able to thank her in person for saving his life.
