Oxford High School junior Clay Webb pinned Gardendale’s Dawson in the final match at of the AHSAA Wrestling Duals Class 6A finals at the Birmingham CrossPlex’s Bill Harris Arena Friday night at 0:50 to give the defending champs a 30-23 victory.
Coach Matt Hicks’ Yellow Jackets led the Rockets (30-8) by a one point, 24-23 heading into the final match after Gardendale’s 220-pounder Trevon Tanniehill pinned Oxford’s Koby Shumate at 5:12. The Rockets forfeited at 195 pounds, however, and those six points proved critical in the end.
Gardendale’s Alex Webb won the 106-pound match to start the contest with a pin over Kaleb Shelton at 3:03 to give the Rockets a quick 6-0 lead. Oxford rebounded to win at 113, 126, 132, 138, 152 and 160 pounds, however.
The 2018 AHSAA Duals Tournament finals continue Saturday with Thompson and Bob Jones squaring off at 1 p.m., at Bill Harris Arena in the Class 7A championship match. Arab and Cleburne County will follow in the 1A/5A finals at 4 p.m.
