Alabama House Committee Looks to Reinstate School Security Task Force

An Alabama House committee moves forward with a bill that would reinstate a school security task force, restrict weapons on campus, and report students under juvenile probation to superintendents.

Former law enforcement officer Representative Allen Farley proposed the bill that would allow law enforcement to charge students who carry weapons on campus- even if they can’t prove intent to harm using those weapons. The bill sparked debate among committee members. Representative Isaac Whorton says, “We have to protect not only victims of juvenile crimes, but juveniles themselves.”

Representative Kerry Rich pushed back by saying, “You run risk on the side of protecting students or on the side of a person accused of something they really didn’t do.” The bill will be voted on in the House.
