Three organizations are coming together to promote reading to children. Gadsden Pediatrics, Help Me Grow, and Success By 6 are introducing a new program called “Reach Out and Read”. This program allows doctors at Gadsden Pediatrics to pass out books to children 6 months to 5 years old and encourage parents to read at home.
The doctors can even sit down and read the book with the child to encourage children to love reading. Medical Director and Pediatrician Claire Yother says reading helps children prepare for a better future. Yother says Gadsden Pediatrics sees about 1,200 children every year.
Each book will be specifically selected for the child’s age. Reach Out and Read Alabama Statewide Coordinator Polly McClure says it’s important to give every child the same opportunities. McClure says this is the only early childhood literacy program in the state of Alabama that takes place in a physician's office.
