Ricky Powell Visits Talladega College for Cake and Conversation

A special guest visits a local college campus to discuss important historical events. Talladega College held a Cake and Conversation today event with Rickey Powell as the guest speaker. Powell is currently performing in the Birmingham Children’s Theatre touring production of “Rosa Parks and the Birmingham Bus Boycott.”

Powell talked with students about his role in the play and the moments in the civil rights era that helped to define him. Powell says that as a child he was friends with two of the girls who were killed in the 1963 Sixteenth Street Baptist Church bombing in Birmingham. He says he hopes his story and the history he shares can bring people closer together.

Powell graduated from Talladega College in 1973 and headed to New York. He has performed on Broadway as part of the original cast of “The Wiz”.
