A Gadsden man accused of stealing a sports car is dead. Gadsden police say that at around 3:15 Sunday afternoon, Lavaris Jones took a Chevrolet Camaro from the 1300 block of Fourth Avenue. A man parked it there while playing basketball at a public park.

The man told police he saw Jones get into the car and drive away. He got into another car, followed Jones and called 911. They followed Jones into Attalla. Attalla police attempted to stop Jones, but he fleed at a high speed. Gadsden police say the chase continued into Oneonta, where Jones crashed and was thrown from the car.

He was flown to UAB Hospital, but died of his injuries.
