A group of local veterans return home from an exciting trip to the nation’s capital. The Elks Alabama Freedom Flight helped 98 veterans visit Washington D.C. on Wednesday. The group began their day at 2:45am when they headed for the airport. Once they arrived in Washington, they toured the city’s many monuments and memorials. Many veterans were anxious to see the names of fallen friends and family on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall.
Vietnam Veteran, David Talley says the trip certainly brought back memories. Talley says he was so honored to be chosen to take this trip and enjoyed every minute. The veterans also met with Senator Doug Jones at the World War Two Monument and visited with Congressman Mike Rogers at the Vietnam Memorial.
The Elks Alabama Freedom Flight committee Member Mike Abrams says that seeing the veterans experience the trip pulls at his heart-strings. The group returned to the Oxford Civic Center around 10:30 Wednesday night. Volunteer, Wendi Feazell says it was a long but rewarding day.
