Ancient artifacts illegally smuggled to Hobby Lobby are being returned to Iraq. Hobby Lobby received nearly 4,000 Iraqi artifacts from a United Arab Emirates based supplier last year. The dealer falsely labeled the contents as “ceramics” and “samples” and illegally shipped them.
US Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Justice Department brought civil action against the arts and craft retailer last year. In July, Hobby Lobby agreed to forfeit the artifacts and pay a $3 million fine to resolve the situation. The artifacts being returned include cuneiform tablets, many dating back to 2100 BC.
