Southside Girls Fall Short In 6A Soccer Semifinal Thriller

Class 6A Girls’ Semifinals Gardendale 2, Southside-Gadsden 1 (2 OT, 8-7 in 2 shootouts) Gardendale captured as dramatic 2-1 win over Southside-Gadsden Friday morning that went finished with the 10th kicker in the second shootout.

The victory catapulted the Rockets (14-5-1) of Coach Jennifer Underwood into the AHSAA Class 6A girls’ state finals against John Carroll Catholic (20-3-1), which will be played Saturday at Huntsville’s John Hunt Soccer Complex at noon.

Eighth grader Erin Cantrell delivered the winning kick to finally close out the dramatic contest. Gardendale scored early in the first half when Peyton Miller scored at the 3:15 mark. Southside-Gadsden ((17-2-1), coached by Tiffany Cargill tied the match with only 1:27 left in the second half on a goal by Caroline Prince, who got a key assist from Rebecca Johnson.

The two teams then battled through two scoreless overtimes to set up the shootout.

Both teams made four goals in the first shootout -- setting up the second shootout. Southside’s Anna Motley, Prince and Camryn Davis each made goals before Gardendale goalkeeper Lauren Motes blocked the fourth try and the fifth Southside player’s attempt sailed too high over the goal. The Rockets got goals from Ashlyn Ray, Bailey Wick and Ainzlee Kauffman before a miss set up Cantrell’s final attempt. She calmly drilled her shot into the right corner of the net to seal the victory.

Motes finished with four saves during regulation for Gardendale and Savanna Blackwell had three saves for the Panthers.
