Four Oxford athletes will become the first ever Special Olympics stand-up paddle boarding team to represent the state of Alabama in national competition. The team members are Hayden Hiett, Ashton Cox, Serena Marable and Erin Paulson. These 4 teens will demonstrate the new sport at the Special Olympics Alabama State Games in Troy this weekend.
They were selected for competition by Coach Tim Cooper after Special Olympics Alabama notified the local Special Olympics Coordinators that the state was interested in including stand-up paddle boarding in the roster of sports it offers to local programs. Cooper says they have been training for months.
The 4 students will become part of Team Alabama when they compete in the 2018 Special Olympics USA Games in Seattle, Washington, July 1st through the 6th. The team will also be joined by a team from the City of Anniston’s Adult Therapeutic Recreation Program.
