Noccalula Falls is continuing a tradition of bringing awareness to one of nature’s oldest reptiles. World Turtle Day is an annual day to focus attention on turtles and tortoises. Turtles have been on the Earth for more than 200 million years. They evolved before mammals, birds, crocodiles, snakes and lizards.
Noccalula Falls is home to more than 10 turtles and tortoises. Park Supervisor Cindy Jones says there are a lot of things we can do to help keep these reptiles safe. One of Noccalula Falls main attractions is a 9 year old tortoise named Goldie. She was donated to the park in 2010.
Goldie weighs more than 65 pounds, but could reach between 175 and 300 pounds and live to be up to 125 years old. You can visit Goldie and all the other tortoises and turtles at the petting zoo inside Noccalula Falls Park.
