Alabama is now on the list of states affected by an outbreak of salmonella linked to pre-cut melon. According to the Centers for Disease control, the outbreak now affects 23 states. The cut watermelon, honeydew, and cantaloupe as well as fruit salads containing these melons have been recalled from Walmart, Kroger, Walgreens, Costco, Whole Foods, and Sprouts Farmers Market.
If you have purchased cut melon from any of these stores, you are urged to throw it away. At least 60 people have become ill from eating the recalled products since April 30th. The Food and Drug Administration has more information on this illness and this particular recall on their website.
