Council on Aging of Etowah County Holds Summit Educating People on Elder Abuse Prevention

Thursday, June 21, 2018

The Executive Director of Council on Aging of Etowah County is warning our viewers about a current scam targeting the elderly. Jenifer Grace stresses that there is no fee for the new Medicare cards, and that when your time comes to get one, it will arrive in the mail.

This was just one of the urgent topics covered today at the 13th Annual Elder Abuse Summit in Gadsden. The event aims to educate people on how to prevent and protect against abuse of senior citizens. While financial abuse of the elderly is growing, Grace said it’s also important to recognize actual physical abuse and learn which steps to take immediately.

Speakers at today’s summit included a local attorney and a local credit union representative. Etowah County is one of the few areas still hosting an annual elder summit.
