The Jacksonville State football team will renew one of its oldest rivalries beginning in 2019.
The Gamecocks and Lions announced a four-year agreement with North Alabama on Wednesday. The series that dates back to 1949 will renew at Burgess-Snow Field on Sept. 21, 2019, and the Lions will return again in 2021. JSU will travel to Florence, Ala., to face UNA on Sept. 12, 2020 at Braly Municipal Stadium and will go back in 2022.
The meeting in Florence in 2020 will be JSU's first game in Braly Municipal Stadium since defeating Pittsburg State there the in the 1992 Division II National Championship Game.
The announcement to renew the series comes right after the Lions officially became a Division I program on July 1. They will compete as an FCS Independent in 2018 before joining the Big South Conference in football in 2019.
The Gamecocks and Lions have played 46 times, dating back to the first meeting on Sept. 29, 1949, a 6-0 JSU win at home in North Alabama's first football game. JSU leads the all-time series 25-18-3 and is 10-1-1 in the last 12 meetings. The two played at least once in every season from 1960-92, and the last meeting was a 31-12 Gamecock victory in 2016.
