An attempted routine traffic stop in Heflin leads to a police chase and drug bust. As officers tried to pull the car over, the passenger threw a Glock handgun from the window and the driver took off. Heflin officers in pursuit performed a PIT maneuver on the vehicle causing it to run off the shoulder, away from the interstate.
As the car came to a stop the driver ran into the woods. A drug-detection dog discovered the driver’s shirt and a camouflage duffle bag. The bag contained 84 pounds of marijuana that has street value of $100,000. Authorities took the passenger, Darius Powell of Mississippi, into custody where he is charged with Drug Trafficking and a weapons offense.
Heflin investigators have a good idea of the driver’s identity and asks that if anyone has any information on this case to contact the Heflin Police Department.
