The US Army Corps of Engineers held a public meeting earlier today in Gadsden concerning surrounding lakes. The meeting was held to address the possibility of decreasing the winter drawdown on Weiss Lake and Logan Martin Lake from six feet to three feet.
Alabama Power requested the winter drawdown and request from Georgia is to allow Lake Allatoona to increase its capacity of water. Economist Meredith LaDart says this would really benefit those who live nearby as well as people who spend a lot of time at the lakes.
If the requests are approved, it will allow better lake access in the winter at all boat ramps, more water will be in the lakes, and property value and tourism will increase. Once the US Army Corps of Engineers completes updating their lake operating manuals, it will be 50 years before they consider doing it again.
