Storms May be the Cause of Boat Dock Fire in Cherokee County

A lightning strike could be the reason behind a boat dock fire in the Bay Springs Community of Cherokee County. Leesburg and Centre Firefighters, along with the Alabama Department of Environmental Management and Cherokee County EMA, were called to the scene on County Road 421 to find a boat dock engulfed in flames.

As firefighters were controlling the fire, they were notified by the property owner that an 18 foot boat and a jet ski had already sunk to the bottom of the lake.

There was also a 500 gallon gasoline tank at the boat dock. Cherokee County EMA estimated 50 to 100 gallons of fuel had already spilled into the lake. These pictures show the Alabama Department of Environmental Management placing containment booms to help prevent the fuel from spreading. No one was injured during the fire.
