Groundbreaking for Hugo Black Memorial in Ashland


A groundbreaking ceremony was held today to honor an American politician and Jurist. The Community Foundation of Northeast Alabama partnered with the Ashland community to begin creating a memorial for Hugo Black.

He was the fifth longest serving member of the United States Supreme Court and a native of Ashland. The memorial sits exactly where Black’s house originally sat. A member of the Community Foundation shares why he believes this memorial is important to the community.

The memorial park will be a place of quiet reflection while also recognizing and honoring those who struggled and fought for basic civil and human rights.
